Oh thank God. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be.




Yeah, after a re-evaluation of The Batman and the very very good Snyder cut I needed this to be decent. Thankfully I can report it was okay, in terms of overall quality. It has a really neat art design, taking a lot of art deco/50s futurisic influence to the backgrounds and environments, with some pretty cool character designs for the human superheroes. The fact alone I get to see a Superman suit a la' Kingdom Come is pretty sick, Diana is somehow even more awesome looking than normal I mean woof (ha ha ha....), Aquaman is a neat mix of classic comics and Justice League Unlimited, we got a new Green Lantern I was not aware of and hello there madame I will research you immediately, poor Flash and Bats could have had more interesting designs to be honest, we even get a frickin' rad Mercy Graves so I'm pretty happy on that front. But the focus is of course on the pets and they are mostly miss for me, not much love for Krypto or Ace (and that is the only time I will speak blasphemy on the name of Ace), the pig PB was cute, the squirrel...eh, but my favorites were the geriatric turtle and not just cause she cusses and it made me lose my shit in the theater, and of course the villains. Kate McKinnon my babe, you once again are my shining star and play one of the unironically best villains I've seen in an animated film in some time and she has a pretty kitty henchman who is cute as heck and will annihilate your enemies with extreme prejudice. I want him. That's the thing with this movie for me, I don't particularly care about Krypto or his story, more the funny odd stuff that happens along the way. It's an average basic premise and plot but it is serviceable. The comedy actually got me more than I could have fathomed, the villain is brilliant but even then has some groaner jokes, the turtle was amazing but any kids movie that drops an F bomb whether censored or not has some respect from me, and the semi-Looney Tunes physical humor worked in places. I am taking this as a small victory, it wasn't bullshit from cover to cover it was just painfully adequate with some bright spots. I can live with that. 2.5 stars, 6/10, and we got only one more week before I take a summer break so we will go out with a bang.

Ghostbusters (2016)

Motherf***er. I had no choice. Work screwed me over and I didn't want to leave you hanging until Friday. I hope you appreciate what I do for you.

Goddamn it. Alright, 2016 Ghostbusters, the review I never wanted to do. You know what the worst part is? This movie had just a few interesting things that I liked but you know how I sometimes run into movies and I can only say they are just adequate. A big ball of middle of the road. This is the antithesis of that. This is such a vacuous movie, quite possibly the most vacuous, unnecessary, biggest pile of nothing I have ever seen in my life. I don't even know how to properly talk about it, it's like the roughest sketch of the 1984 script but done by a very very poor script writer and director. No wait, I got it. It's like if a person who has never actually seen Ghostbusters but their friends are really into it, and they knew the most bare bones basics of the franchise, sat down and wrote out a story to share with those friends of theirs hoping to be accepted as part of the club. It has some semblance of recognizability but it has zero of the heart or humor of those movies. I barely have anything to say at this point. So let's talk about the brief good things I liked. I dig the new look of the Ecto-1, it's different but still nice looking. I like the progression of the proton packs, how it goes from this big blocky gun that literally needs a rolling desk full of equipment to work, to the slightly more refined backpacks, to innovative and neat gadgets like the pistols and the power glove. Leslie Jones is the best part of the movie period and made me laugh the most (and there was only 5 instances where I did laugh), she still has to work with this amateur script but can do a fair bit with it. I hold no hate to any of the main cast, I just know they should have been reigned in and given better material. Even my babe, Kate McKinnon couldn't save it, in fact the second I saw her in the trailer I thought she was going to effortlessly be my favorite character. But she wasn't really, her offbeat mannerisms and humor seemed more a product of desperately trying to stay afloat in the scene than genuine good acting. There's just so much holding me back from liking it, it's not a horrible story, it needed several friggin' drafts and re-edits but it could have been decent. For every neat little thing I liked there was 20 steps backwards. A phenomenal aura of uncomfortable silence permeated the room, almost staring into the void yet somehow much worse. If you gaze long enough into the abyss you can at least get existential and ask some monumental questions. There is no such escape in this movie. It stuns me shitless how little I can honestly say about it. It gave me so little to work with, I can't even just go on a verbal tidalwave of obscenity and abject rage because there is nothing there. It's like this zen like state where all of reality melts away into nothing and you remain with nothing to say. If our main stars had a terrific experience making this movie and have fun memories to hold onto for the rest of their lives, that's wonderful and I will never give them hell about it. But it's an unnecessary, pointless, empty shell that I will forever regret spending $3 to watch. 1 star, 1.5/10, I'm sorry I had to do this but I was going to take a bullet in some way or another, work or reviews. I can weather this. So thank you for putting up with this brief and unwanted detour, I really hope you'll join me tomorrow, goodnight.

In Retrospect: Rough Night

You know, I think I enjoyed this movie more on a second viewing.

It really is a funny movie with a lot of reasonably crazy women, so I obviously am going to enjoy myself. It certainly brightened up my day when I rented it. The comedy though crude at moments just made me crack up! This is a hilarious movie that deals with some pretty dark, grim stuff like everyone's favorite topic at social gatherings: Murder. And yet....it still is greatly amusing. It's like Clue, all these rather eccentric people gather together for a gathering, someone dies, and they try to evade police and other visitors who could see the body. And I loved that movie! Still do! So yeah, I still recommend it to people wanting a fun time. Kate McKinnon still just slays me, like seriously she deserves to be in more movies. My God, just her comedic timing and her facial expressions are comedy gold to me! She just never ceases to make me laugh, and steals the whole damn movie easily. Scarlett is fun but can bring the drama a bit, which I can appreciate so it's not comedy for the sake of comedy. Jillian Bell is kinda well....she's just not nice, let's put it at that but it shocked me at the reason why. I mean that scene has some real raw emotion in it and can hit home for some people. It's a good movie and should be seen again, I certainly enjoyed it more on a second viewing so maybe you will too.

Now, I know there was a movie that hit video yesterday. I want to assure you I did not forget (not by a long shot) so be patient. It will work out. And hopefully, I can get two brand new movie reviews out before next week. So until then, have fun peeps!

Rough Night

I needed a break from Transformers, so here we go!

Rough Night is a quite enjoyable comedy about a group of friends who, one day set up a bachelorette party and it turns into as the title says a rough night. All seems to be going well until a stripper comes and you know, they kinda, maybe, sort of accidentaly bash his brains out on the nice white tile floors and have to hide the body. It happens. So the whole night is ruined as our group of friends try to evade jail time for manslaughter. Oh well, it leads to some decent comedy and some of the events that unfold you surprisingly don't see coming and hell, even one little scene hit me right in the heart because of how unabashedly real it is. But I almost want to say the movie is a vehicle for these talented ladies comedy, it is, but it tells a decent story as well. The Lady Scarlett is in this movie which always makes me happy and she does have bursts of comedy but isn't afraid to bust the waterworks, although I have to really say Kate McKinnon slayed me! She was kinda the best part of the movie, and I know how blasphemous that is to me but it's true! That Australian accent just brings such joy to me! And the rest of the ladies like Jillian Bell and Ilana Glaze were really putting their all into this, so they of course have to be commended. Did I enjoy seeing the movie? Yes, absolutely. Would I buy it? Well, probably not. Rent it for a movie night with friends, without a doubt but not buy it. Do I recommend you see it in the theaters? Yeah, if you got nothing to do that day, you feel kinda bored, make a trip to the theater and see if it makes your day a bit better!
